Description:

This UV-201A (01-A) Westinghouse Lamp Co. USA made for RCA Radiotron , original production from the 1920s , is an extremely rare vintage globe tube, supplied in NOS NIB condition complete with original box and inner papers. It is one of the most iconic models of the first generation of American radio tubes, used as a detector and amplifier in radios of the 1920s and considered today a reference object in historical collecting.
The silver globe tube retains exceptional brilliance and integrity, while the Bakelite base bears the Westinghouse for RCA Radiotron inscriptions, a testament to the industrial collaboration of the time. This example has been tested in our laboratory with a VERY STRONG rating, a truly rare occurrence for such ancient tubes, making it suitable not only for collecting but also for the philological restoration of vintage equipment.

Sound Characteristics
Although it was a tube created for radio applications in the early 1900s, the UV-201A is still appreciated today for its extremely natural, smooth and harmonic-rich output, typical of the low-power triodes of the time.

Bass
Smooth, clean, contained yet well-defined in their original structure. Perfectly consistent with the vintage timbre.

Medium
Very natural and organic. Voices are reproduced with surprising realism for such an ancient technology, thanks to the direct triode and hot-wire construction.

High
Sweet, delicate, and slightly attenuated, with the typical airiness of vintage globe triodes. No harshness, no harshness.

Dynamics
The dynamics are soft and progressive: the valve responds with elegance and graduality, favoring musicality and naturalness over impact.

Soundstage
Intimate, believable, with a surprising three-dimensionality for a component designed a century ago. It offers a compact yet authentic soundstage, with a decidedly "antique" feel.

🎧 Use in Hi-Fi and Vintage Equipment
The UV-201A is primarily intended for:

  • restorations of radios from the 1920s and early 1930s,
  • direct triode experimental equipment,
  • philological projects and museum reconstructions.

In modern systems it can only be used in specific circuits, always respecting the filament current and the expected anode voltage.

🎸 Use in Music Applications
Generally not used in modern musical amplifiers, it is nevertheless prized by builders and experimenters working with primitive triodes to achieve extremely warm, organic, low-power tones.

Test Results:

Valve tested on AVO CT 160 Tube tester:

  • Test Conditions: Va = 150V ; Vg = -9V
  • Average 100%: Gm = 800 ; Ia = 3 mA
  • Test Result: VERY STRONG

Valve: Gm = 1100; Ia = 7 mA

Additional Tests Performed:
  • Output Quality: Excellent – Very strong and stable output, no fluctuations.
  • Short circuits and GAS: Absent.

Conditions:

  • Condition: NOS - NIB - New Old Stock, New In Box - Tested and working - Supplied in original box.
  • Functionality: Fully functional.
  • Cosmetic condition: Good – Lettering partially eroded, but still legible. Valve body in good condition. See photos for details.
