Description:

Refined pair of ECC88 / 6DJ8 with Hewlett-Packard branding, built at the Philips factory in Heerlen, Netherlands, and identified by the etched code Δ2L3. This code dates the production to the third week of December 1962, while the Disc Dimpled Getter structure represents one of the characteristic configurations of Dutch production from that period.

The Hewlett-Packard branding signifies its OEM designation for the historic American manufacturer of electronic instruments and laboratory equipment. Beyond the commercial label, the factory code etched on the glass clearly documents its Heerlen Made in Holland origin, which is highly sought after by vintage European tube enthusiasts.

The two tubes constitute an Amplitrex Matched pair with good overall consistency. Tube 1 shows an average transconductance of 11.15 mA/V and an average anode current of 11.6 mA; Tube 2 measures an average of 10.52 mA/V and 10.3 mA. Both specimens also show excellent internal balance: the respective sections are very close in both transconductance and anode current.

Operation proved stable and smooth, with low microphonics, no gas, and no shorts. This selection makes the pair suitable for hi-fi preamplifiers, headphone amplifiers, buffers, line stages and drivers, as well as for laboratory equipment and musical instrument amplifiers compatible with ECC88 or 6DJ8. The low microphonics allow for use in even the most sensitive stages, including input positions and, in compatible equipment, phono stages.

In terms of sound, Heerlen-produced ECC88s are appreciated for a transparent, airy, and refined presentation, with a natural midrange, extended and well-defined high frequencies, and fast, controlled bass. In hi-fi systems, they promote an orderly soundstage, good instrument separation, and a detailed reproduction without sacrificing musicality.

A proposal of significant interest for those seeking an authentic vintage European pair, with documented Heerlen origin, Disc Dimpled Getter, well-balanced sections, and low microphonics: two Hewlett-Packard ECC88 / 6DJ8 tubes produced in Holland in December 1962, individually tested and ready for use.
