AMPLITREX Tested – VERY STRONG – Low Noise & Microphonics – Vintage American Sylvania Production

Test Results:

Tubes tested on an Amplitrex AT-1000 Tube tester:

  • Test Conditions: Va = 250V, Vg = -8V
  • Average 100% Gm = 2600 ; Ia = 9.0 mA

Tube #2:

  • Section 1: Gm = 2500 ; Ia = 8.4 mA
  • Section 2: Gm = 2500 ; Ia = 7.8 mA

Tube #8:

  • Section 1: Gm = 2500 ; Ia = 8.2 mA
  • Section 2: Gm = 2500 ; Ia = 8.6 mA
Additional tests performed:
  • Burn-in / Stability Test: 48h – OK
  • Microphonics: Low. Tested and suitable for hi-fi use, including phono stages and guitar amplifiers. Also suitable for V1.
  • Emission Quality: Excellent – Very strong and stable emission, without fluctuations.
  • Shorts and GAS: None.

Description:

An important pair of 6SN7GTB Baldwin tubes produced by Sylvania, made in the United States in 1961 and originating from the same production batch. Both units feature the code 312 113: the EIA code 312 identifies Sylvania Electric Products Inc. of Emporium, Pennsylvania, while 113 indicates the 13th week of 1961. The Baldwin branding documents the OEM destination for the historic American organ and musical equipment manufacturer.

These two tubes form an Amplitrex Matched pair of remarkable consistency. All four sections measure exactly 2500 µmhos, offering perfect transconductance matching between the two units. The plate currents are also very close, ranging between 7.8 and 8.6 mA, with average values of 8.1 and 8.4 mA: a minimal deviation that confirms the pair's excellent operating uniformity.

The internal balance is equally convincing. Tube #2 features sections of 2500/2500 µmhos and 8.4/7.8 mA, while Tube #8 measures 2500/2500 µmhos and 8.2/8.6 mA. This consistency makes the pair particularly suitable for stereo circuits, headphone amplifiers, preamplifiers, and drivers, as well as for applications requiring good symmetry between sections.

During testing, both tubes showed strong, steady, and stable emission, without fluctuations, shorts, or gas presence. Their low microphonics allow for use in the most sensitive audio stages of compatible equipment, including input and V1 positions in musical instrument amplifiers.

In terms of sound, Sylvania-produced 6SN7GTBs are appreciated for an open, dynamic, and natural presentation, with a transparent midrange, solid and controlled low frequencies, and defined highs that are never harsh. The exceptional electrical uniformity of this pair further promotes coherent reproduction between channels, a stable soundstage, and excellent overall balance.

A proposal of particular interest for those seeking a true American matched pair from the same batch, with identical manufacturing codes, perfectly matched transconductance, low microphonics, and excellent cosmetic condition: two authentic Baldwins produced by Sylvania in 1961, individually tested and ready for use.
