6L6WGB / 5881 GE Matched Quad Brown Base Side OO Getter Tubes Made in CANADA @ TEST NOS

Description:

This matched quartet of GE-branded 5881s, produced in Canadian factories in the late 1950s, represents one of the most respected versions of the 6L6WGB. Construction includes black solid plates , dual 'OO'-shaped side getters , and a brown Bakelite base , a hallmark of high-quality military and OEM supplies.
The tubes are used but tested with NOS values , and are perfectly matched to each other for anode current and transconductance, ensuring sonic consistency and technical reliability in every application.

Timbre characteristics:

Bass:
Tight, controlled, and precise. The low end of the 5881 GE is less explosive than that of modern 6L6GCs, but gains in articulation and definition. Perfect for detailed listening or fast, dry bass.

Medium:
Balanced, dynamic, and natural. The mids emerge with fluidity and great coherence, offering a neutral yet never sterile timbre. Vocals are rendered realistically and pleasantly, without artificial coloration.

Highs:
Delicate and well-extended. The highs are silky, well-integrated, and never invasive. Detail is present but not aggressive, with a fine grain that favors prolonged listening.

Dynamics:
Responsive and fluid, with excellent microdynamics. Transient response is natural and precise, making the 5881 ideal for those seeking expressiveness without excess.

Soundstage:
Coherent and three-dimensional. The soundstage opens up with order and depth, offering good separation between instruments and vocals. Excellent positioning of sound sources and well-managed spatiality.

🎧 Use in Push-Pull Stereo Hi-Fi Amplifiers

Ideal for stereo or integrated amplifiers based on push-pull topologies, these GE 5881s are perfect for vintage or modern projects. They offer a balanced and musical sound , with low noise, excellent control and a classic yet refined sonic signature. Particularly suitable for medium-high efficiency systems or for those who prefer a transparent yet warm sound.

🎸 Use in Guitar and Bass Amplifiers

The 5881 GE Canada is a popular choice in Fender blackface and brownface circuits (such as the Bassman, Bandmaster, Pro). They offer progressive harmonic compression , clean, dynamic headroom , and controlled saturation , ideal for jazz, blues, and “American” cleans. They are also excellent for boutique projects seeking a reliable, vintage voice.

🎯 Note for audiophiles and technicians

The 5881 GE Canada offers one of the most balanced and honest sounds of the 6L6 family: musicality, stability, and a natural voice that never tires. The sturdy construction and stable electrical characteristics make this matched quartet ideal for restorations, upgrades, and everyday use in demanding systems.

  • ATTENTION PLEASE

Please understand that the writing on the glass of vintage valves has become very delicate over the years and comes off easily. You must handle them with extreme care to avoid this.
