12AX7 / ECC83 BALDWIN by TOSHIBA – Long Gray Plates – O Getter – Matched Pair – Made in Japan

AMPLITREX Tested – VERY STRONG – Low Noise & Microphonics – Vintage Japanese Toshiba Production

Description

Matched pair of 12AX7 / ECC83 Baldwin produced by Toshiba in Japan, carefully selected for preamplifiers, phono stages, integrated amplifiers, instrument amplifiers, and compatible applications that require low noise, stability, and good electrical consistency between channels.

The tubes feature the sought-after Long Gray Plates construction with a top O Getter, typical of vintage Toshiba production. The Baldwin branding indicates a supply intended for professional electronic organs, an application where reliability, quiet operation, and continuous performance were fundamental requirements.

Both come from the same manufacturing batch and have been tested and matched in our laboratory using the Amplitrex AT-1000 Tube Tester. The pair achieved a VERY STRONG rating and exhibited Low Noise & Microphonics, a particularly important characteristic in high-gain stages and the most sensitive positions in the circuit.

Matching was performed on transconductance, with very close Gm values between the two tubes and good overall uniformity of the four sections.

Sonically, they offer a clean, balanced, and musical presentation, with controlled bass, natural and well-articulated mids, open but never aggressive highs, and precise dynamic response. Toshiba production is appreciated for transparency, quietness, and reliability, maintaining a fluid and pleasant character even during prolonged listening sessions.

Suitable for hi-fi preamplifiers, phono stages, driver stages, phase inverters, headphone amplifiers, and instrument amplifiers compatible with 12AX7 / ECC83.

The tubes are used and fully functional. The Baldwin lettering shows wear, clearly visible in the photographs, but without any impact on performance.

A truly tested, selected, and matched vintage Japanese pair from Vacuum Tubes Treasures, ideal for those seeking quiet, musical, and still very strong 12AX7 Toshiba tubes.

Test Results

Tubes tested on AMPLITREX AT-1000 Tube Tester

Test Conditions: Va = 250V, Vg = -2V
Average 100%: Gm = 1600 ; Ia = 1.2 mA
Test Result: VERY STRONG

Tube 1:

  • Section 1: Gm = 1450 ; Ia = 1.1 mA
  • Section 2: Gm = 1400 ; Ia = 1.1 mA

Tube 2:

  • Section 1: Gm = 1350 ; Ia = 0.9 mA
  • Section 2: Gm = 1400 ; Ia = 1.0 mA

Additional Tests Performed

  • Burning Test: 48h – OK
  • Microphonics: Low. Tested and suitable for hi-fi use, including phono stages and guitar amplifiers. Also suitable for V1 position.
  • Balance: Very good. The sections are consistent and well-aligned, making the tube also suitable for use as a phase inverter in hi-fi and instrument applications.
  • Emission Quality: Excellent – very strong and stable emission, without fluctuations.
  • Shorts and GAS: Absent.

  • ATTENTION PLEASE

Please understand that the writing on the glass of vintage valves has become very delicate over the years and comes off easily. You must handle them with extreme care to avoid this.
