12AU7A / ECC82 NOS Baldwin by SYLVANIA Long Gray Plates Halo Getter Tested Tube Made in USA '60s

AMPLITREX Tested – Low Noise & Microphonics – Guitar Amp Grade – Vintage American SYLVANIA Production

Description

This 12AU7 / ECC82 NOS Baldwin by Sylvania tube, Made in USA in 1960, represents a classic American tube from the golden age of US tube production.

Tubes branded Baldwin were intended for professional musical applications, particularly high-end electronic organs, where reliability, stability, and durability were fundamental requirements. Behind the Baldwin brand, in this case, we find the renowned production of Sylvania Electric Products Inc., recognizable by the typical construction with Long Gray Plates and Halo Getter.

This tube has been tested with an AMPLITREX AT-1000 Tube Tester, resulting in VERY STRONG emission, with low noise, contained microphonics, and successfully passed the Burning Test.

The electrical performance is very high, with emission exceeding nominal reference values. The sections show a slight imbalance, a characteristic that does not limit its use in the intended applications but makes this particular sample interesting for musical uses and for positions not critical to section symmetry.

For this reason, the tube is particularly recommended for guitar amplifiers, in positions like V2, V3, and V4, where musicality, reliability, and tonal character are often more important than perfect electrical symmetry.

Tonal characteristics and sonic description

Sylvania Long Gray Plates from the early 1960s are appreciated for a balanced, open, and natural sound, with a very recognizable American musicality.

In this matched pair selection, the consistency between the two tubes contributes to a stable, orderly, and very pleasing presentation, ideal for quality stereo systems.

Bass

The low range is controlled, articulate, and well-supported. It offers a solid foundation without being intrusive, maintaining rhythm and clarity even in complex passages.

Mids

The mids are natural, clear, and musical. Vocals and acoustic instruments are well-focused, with a balanced and pleasing harmonic texture.

Treble

The high range is open and clean, with good extension and a fluid, never aggressive, presentation. Detail remains well integrated into the musical message.

Dynamics

Dynamics are prompt and consistent, with a stable and well-controlled response. The pair's matching helps maintain uniformity and timbral continuity between the two channels.

Soundstage

The soundstage appears wide, stable, and well-organized. The consistency of the pair favors proper instrument separation and a balanced presentation of the stereophonic image.

🎧 Use in Hi-Fi Stereo Amplifiers

The tube can be used in:

  • line stages
  • driver stages
  • tube buffers
  • hi-fi applications compatible with 12AU7 / ECC82

The sections are not perfectly symmetrical, therefore it is not the ideal choice for applications requiring a high level of internal balance between the two sections.

🎸 Use in Musical Amplifiers

This is probably the most interesting intended use for this sample.

Particularly recommended for:

  • V2
  • V3
  • V4
  • driver stages
  • vintage and boutique amplifiers
  • applications where musicality and reliability are sought

The combination of:

  • very strong emission
  • low noise
  • contained microphonics
  • Sylvania Long Gray Plates construction

makes it a valid candidate for numerous musical applications.

🎯 Note for musicians and technicians

This tube combines several highly appreciated elements:

  • Sylvania Made in USA production
  • Baldwin brand
  • Long Gray Plates
  • Halo Getter
  • NOS – New Old Stock
  • VERY STRONG emission
  • Low Noise
  • Burning Test OK

A particularly interesting selection for those who want a true vintage American tube intended for guitar amplifiers and compatible musical applications.

Test Results

  • ATTENTION PLEASE

Please understand that the writing on the glass of vintage valves has become very delicate over the years and comes off easily. You must handle them with extreme care to avoid this. Wear and damage to the writing on the valves reduces their market value and causes damage. Please exercise extreme caution.
